Hi
My name is
Stephen Katama
I represent many different African handcrafters/artists. The majority of the artists come from the remote villages of Eastern Kenya.
What is unique about these artists is not only their ability at creating beautiful wood carvings, but the tools they use were all made locally from scrap metal. Each piece of art is the result of two or more handcrafters, wood buyers, carvers, and finishers. Each perform an active role in th creation of each beautiful object. The woodwork is craftedfrom one of following woods: jakarada, mahogany, teak, and olive wood.
Their masterpieces are inspired by the environment the Artist comes from and provides a major source of income in the semi-arid eastern part of Kenya.
The Artists for this collection include:
David Mwanzia Kilonzo from Machakos Kilembwa, KE specializes in tableware;
David Kiema from Wamunyu, KE specializing in three dimensional art, all the big five animals;
Richard Kioko Mwanzia from Mbooni Makueni county, KE specializing in giraffes, wall hangings, and tableware;
Mumo from Machakos county, KE specializing in necking giraffes, bending giraffes, etc;
Stephen Muesma Kyengo from Ikombe Village, KE specializing in animals in action and animal families;
and last, but not least is Anonymous, the abstract man from Ukambani, KE whose abstract art in wood will challenge your mind trying to imagine the motive behind the abstract piece you are looking at.
Please enjoy all of the artwork as you look for the piece that brought you to this page.
